One of New York’s leading plastic surgeons revealed to DailyMail.com which surgeries clients are looking for the most in 2023.
Dr. Barry Weintraub, who has a practice in Manhattan, said one of the standouts this year so far has been oral fat removal surgery.
The procedure – which Chrissy Teigen has openly admitted to having – involves removing facial fat to highlight the bone structure, particularly the cheekbones and the hollowed areas between the cheeks and jawline.
But Dr Weintraub said an anti-aging procedure involving radio waves had also started to take off in recent months, along with chin implants.
And a favorite celebrity surgery is still hugely popular.
Buccal fat removal
Popularized by celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen — and reportedly behind the jaws of Lea Michelle and Sophie Turner — oral fat surgery is all the rage this winter.
The surgery removes the buccal fat pads from inside the mouth. Dr. Weintraub says these pads sometimes serve as a buffer between teeth when chewing, but aren’t entirely necessary.
A surgeon will take what Dr. Weintraub describes as a “spoonful” of fat from a patient’s cheek, removing some of the “puff” from their cheeks.
He compares the effect it has on a person’s face to make it look like they’re smoking a cigarette – but permanently. He said it’s “desirable” angularity.
This is a purely cosmetic and permanent procedure.
Dr. Weintraub, who performs two of the procedures each week in his Manhattan practice, makes an incision from inside a patient’s mouth.
About 75 percent of procedures are performed on women. An operation usually costs between $9,500 and $12,500.
The risks are low and complications are rare. In rare cases, a patient will suffer from infection at the incision site or injury to certain nerves in the face.
If the procedure is botched, a person could end up with an asymmetrical face. This might require another cosmetic procedure to fix.
Recovery is often quick. Dr. Weintraub said a person who has oral fat removal surgery can return to work the next day.
It may take some time for the angular jawline to appear in recipients, as some recipients suffer from swelling for weeks after the procedure.
Radiofrequency micro-needling
Microneedling is a relatively painless procedure where a small device is used to puncture their skin in an effort to refresh and rejuvenate it.
Dr Weintraub described it as a “beautiful thing”, where a person’s face can look refreshed and brand new.
Using a small device with a needle attached, a surgeon will poke small holes in a person’s skin tissue.
Then, a radio frequency wave will target the tissues under the skin. This warms the skin and stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers.
Collagen is a protein that helps build connective tissues in the body. It is particularly valuable for the skin, as it allows it to resist stretching and pulling.
When the skin repairs itself, it is smoother and looks cleaner. It also makes a person look younger.
The procedure itself will usually take around 20 minutes to cover the entire face.
Because it causes little pain and is minimally invasive, people can just walk out of their surgeon’s office and go on with the rest of their day without downtime.
The procedure usually costs between $1,000 and $2,000 for a single session.
cheekbone fillers
Often a procedure associated with the removal of buccal fat, cheekbone fillers are also gaining in popularity.
The procedure works by adding volume to a person’s cheekbone by stimulating collagen production in the cheeks.
The patient receives injections of hyaluronic acid, a natural fluid produced in the eyes and joints.
Its main purpose is to lubricate body parts. People with arthritis can receive these injections to help relieve joint pain.
When put into the cheeks, the fluids give the skin around the cheekbones a more distinct appearance.
The procedure smoothes wrinkles around the nose and mouth and makes the cheek more pronounced.
Some may also use the injections to give their face a more symmetrical look, balancing out any unevenness in the cheekbones.
A patient can return to regular daily activities immediately after receiving the filler and take about two days to appear fully in a patient.
It can cost between $500 and $1,000 per hit a person receives, with one hit needed for each cheek.
Fox and Bedroom eye lift
The surgical creation of more “sensual” and “sexy” eyebrows was another trend that emerged in late 2022 and continued into the new year.
Fox eyes, the slanted eyebrows described by some as “almond-shaped”, raise the outside of a person’s eyebrows.
The operation makes a person’s eyes appear longer and smooths out the wrinkles around them, making them look younger.
Although there are many different ways for a surgeon to create this effect, the most common is a practice called PDO threading.
For this practice, a surgeon numbs a person’s eyebrows and then places threads under a person’s skin.
These threads will raise a person’s eyebrows, giving them the appearance of fox eyes. Their effect lasts about three months.
Fox eye procedures typically cost between $500 and $1,000.
Dr. Weintraub also offers a similar procedure, called an “in-bedroom eye lift.” This procedure modifies the eyebrows using a filler and lifts the center of the eyebrows.
It creates an effect similar to fox eyes, removing wrinkles and making a person look younger.
