Georgie Cooper is officially a dad! During Thursday Young SheldonMandy gave birth to their daughter — a precious “niblingo” named Constance.
In anticipation of the arrival of the bundle of joy, the The Big Bang Theory The prequel delivered a dramatic George and Mary moment for two seasons, which you can read more about here. The second half of our Q&A with executive producer Steve Holland, which you can read below, focuses exclusively on the baby and what the future holds for new parents Georgie and Mandy.
TVLINE | I have to be honest: I was hoping the Alice Cooper name would stick.
(Laughs) It was pretty good.
TVLINE | Were there other names considered before choosing Constance? We threw a bunch, but Meemaw has done so much for Mandy since she got pregnant. Georgie too, but Meemaw was really the one who was there for her, so it seemed like a very sweet nod to Meemaw.
TVLINE | I can’t imagine naming the baby after Georgie’s grandma is going to sit well with Mandy’s mom, Audrey. And their relationship is already strained enough….
I don’t think that helps! Their relationship is slowly progressing (towards) something better, but it’s going to be a long journey. It’s no fun having them fix their relationship in one episode and everyone is happy. And we want to keep Mandy at Meemaw’s for now, so a little tension with her parents is good for us.
TVLINE | While we’re talking about Mandy’s parents…. In Season 2, Georgie had a part-time job at the Herschel Sparks tire store. Since then you’ve lost Billy Gardell to Bob Hearts Abishola, but you introduced McCallister Auto & Tire. Can we read anything into Dr. Tire’s potential future in-laws who run another tire shop nearby?I would like! (Laughs)
TVLINE | We didn’t do see a baby in this episode. And on The Big Bang Theory, Howard and Bernadette’s children were kept off-screen until the series finale. Will Constance stay off-screen as well?
You can’t get away with that on this show! Although I wasn’t looking forward to it, we’ve had a lot of babies on set over the past few months. We shot the first episode with a baby before Christmas, then there was the holidays, then we couldn’t use that same baby because the next episode was immediately after (the next one), and that baby now had one more month. With a newborn, a month is a lot, so we have a lot of babies coming. I was worried about that, but honestly the babies have been great. It was quite fun to tour with them…knock on wood! It can go wrong at any time!
TVLINE | You said you didn’t want to do a traditional birth episode because it’s been done thousands of times. How are you going to avoid doing episodes about Georgie and Mandy as first-time parents that have also been done a thousand times?Georgie and Mandy’s relationship is in such a strange place, which gave us a bit of a different entry into this. They never really dated. They kind of did it for a little while, and then she got pregnant, and then they didn’t talk to each other. Then they got closer and she pushed him away, then she told him he should go out with other women. I think it’s an interesting wrinkle. They try to figure out how to be new parents and also try to figure out what their relationship is with each other.
TVLINE | The elephant in the room is that Georgie is still 17. But we must be approaching his 18th birthday. Are we approaching his official entry into adulthood before the end of the season?
We do! His birthday is an episode
